About
Are you lost in the forest of life?
We aren’t meant to live our lives in isolation from others. However, most of us do as life’s struggles get in the way.
We feel that no one sees us, hears us, or understands us. No one gets what we’re going through.
There are times when life becomes more challenging day by day. You stop feeling successful in all aspects of life. You start to lose yourself because of what you have experienced.
Sometimes, the challenging times derail the plans you had for your life.
Therapy offers you a path back to yourself. My job is to be your guide.
What therapy is (and what it isn’t)
Therapy isn’t a magic pill. But it does offer some powerful benefits.
It’s an hour a week where you get to stop performing and start figuring out what’s true for you. What you need. What you want. How to get there.
Therapy shows you how healing a connection can be.
As you feel seen and heard, and as you learn new ways of thinking and being, you’ll start making changes in your life. No singular action you take will fix everything. But over time, all the many small and large changes you make will have a huge impact.
You will shift your focus from your immediate present to your future.
You will have the ability to define and walk your path with confidence.
A guide makes walking through the forest easier.
When people describe me, they consistently say that I am direct and curious.
In coming into therapy with me, you can be assured that I won’t beat around the bush.
Direct means I’ll say what needs to be said. Not in a cruel way. You’re already hurting, and I would never want to add to that. But I won’t dance around the hard things, and I won’t let you stay comfortable in a story that’s keeping you small.
Curious means I show up genuinely wanting to know you. Your life’s journey is why we are sitting in the room together. I ask questions throughout our work so that I can understand what you’re living through as deeply as possible. Every person who sits across from me has a story that’s entirely their own, and you are the expert on you.
The forest path starts to clear.
Our initial weekly appointments build the foundation of what we’ll focus on. We pick our direction, form a connection, and start to clear the path forward.
Therapy is your time every week to say all the things you can’t say to others. To unburden yourself from all the struggles of daily life.
You can be your authentic self here without judgement. That includes changing your mind.
We don’t always start out with all the answers you’re seeking, but we can certainly find them.
Therapy is your path to connection.
That looks different for each person. Sometimes, building connection involves some trial and error. We have to try something to know it won’t work. Then, we backtrack and try something else.
Throughout all of that, I will be there. A steady, consistent, and calm presence who keeps the big picture in mind.
As you experience the connection and my genuine curiosity (plus my willingness to ask you the real questions that need to be asked), our connection deepens. You experience a deep recognition that you aren’t alone. This in and of itself is healing.
A light begins to appear.
Taking the time to discover yourself, heal the pain, and recover from stress is the greatest investment you could make in yourself.
Life wants to pull us in so many directions at once. Without support in learning what to respond to, it gets overwhelming fast. You may have had a path at one time, but now it is lost.
In therapy, your goals become our shared goals. You may be surprised to find that I work just as hard as you do in sessions.
When you want to sprint, I am sprinting beside you.
When you want to take a nice stroll, I will stroll with you.
We move at your pace. This is your life we are changing. You call the shots.
I bet you underestimate how quickly you can grow, though.
Once the work begins and you follow through on doing the work, you may shock yourself at how fast you start to feel relief and how quickly you feel more in control. Life is tough, and you can build the resiliency needed to withstand it.

About Laureca Schofield
My forest path wasn’t always clear either.
My purpose in practicing therapy is to help people feel connected and to be what I needed as a kid.
I was called to this work because of my own life struggles. Curiosity has spurred so much of my growth, personally and professionally. The desire for knowledge pushed me to find the support and guidance I needed.
We live in a culture that has long discouraged talking about our struggles or asking for support. That’s slowly changing, as brave people like you take the leap to better themselves.
The world needs more people striving to get their needs met so they can show up as their authentic selves.
My professional path
I received a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. My training focused on understanding and helping the individual with a range of presenting concerns, including developmental stages, family therapy, trauma work, and cultural awareness, and my program gave me the chance to work in a variety of settings and with a diverse population.
I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Iowa and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois, offering telehealth to clients in both states.
Outside of work
I enjoy experiencing new things, reading, doing puzzles, and baking for others.
